Netflix may raise prices for its ad-based tier following the recent promotion of a cheaper ad-free plan and the discontinuation of the Basic subscription. This move is possibly influenced by the ongoing actors’ strike targeting the company.
Reports suggest Netflix will wait until the strike concludes before implementing price hikes, starting in the U.S. and Canada and then globally. While exact figures aren’t provided, it’s likely to follow Netflix’s previous modest increases, possibly $1 to $2 per month.
Netflix hasn’t confirmed this but is focusing on expanding ad-based offerings, notably the Standard with ads tier, which has gained popularity among subscribers.
The removal of the $10 Basic subscription may already have led to price hikes for some users, leaving them with the $7 ad-supported or $15.50 Standard options.
This comes at a time when Netflix’s ad chief, Jeremi Gorman, has left the company, signaling Netflix’s commitment to its ad business.
As negotiations continue, Netflix is adjusting its pricing strategy, and more details may emerge in the upcoming quarterly earnings report on October 18. Users should be prepared for possible subscription cost changes.
